Finding Financial Confidence in a Complex Ministry

Overview

Located in Glens Falls, New York, Open Door Mission has grown significantly since serving its first meal from an RV in 1991. Today, it operates a 57-bed shelter, a food pantry and multiple outreach programs that serve thousands of individuals and families across a broad, rural region.

When CEO Jamie Munyon stepped into his role more than nine years ago, the Mission was just beginning to offer emergency shelter. As its programming expanded to include year-round housing and school-based food support, so did its operational complexity—and financial demands.

“We were working with a local CFO on a contract basis, but rescue missions are complex,” Munyon explained. “There’s a mix of restricted funding, donor management, audits and multiple program costs. We needed someone who truly understood our world.”

The Challenge

Open Door Mission’s rapid growth came with new financial challenges. The complexity of managing restricted grants, reporting requirements and multiple program budgets demanded a more specialized level of financial expertise.

In the middle of a critical audit, the Mission’s long-time accounting firm unexpectedly stepped away—leaving Munyon and his team scrambling to meet an important state deadline. At the same time, the board was seeking more consistent, transparent visibility into the organization’s financial position, including future cash flow.

The Solution

Through a connection on the board, Munyon was introduced to CFO Leverage. A Zoom meeting with Sam Coates and Daniel Weaver quickly revealed that this was the right fit.

“Daniel knows this space,” Munyon said. “He understood the intricacies of a rescue mission right away.”

Even though CFO Leverage is based in another state, the partnership was seamless. Weaver joined board meetings and integrated closely with the staff, quickly becoming a trusted extension of the team.

The Results

With CFO Leverage’s guidance, Open Door Mission successfully completed its audit on time and gained greater financial clarity. The board and leadership now have the tools and insight to confidently plan ahead, even as their services continue to expand.

Improved Audit Process

When the previous audit partner stepped away mid-project, Weaver went beyond the original scope of work—identifying, vetting and onboarding a new audit firm on a tight timeline.

“That kind of support went far beyond the scope of our agreement,” Munyon shared.

Enhanced Cash Flow Clarity

CFO Leverage built on Open Door’s existing systems to create a dynamic, real-time cash flow projection model. This new tool gave the leadership team immediate visibility into financial trends and future needs.

“It’s become an incredible tool, we now have clarity on where we stand and what’s ahead.”

Strategic Partnership

Munyon praised the complementary strengths of both Coates and Weaver:

“Daniel is brilliant—analytical and calm under
pressure. Sam is relational and thoughtful.
It’s great to work alongside both of them.”

CFO Leverage gives us confidence in our numbers and clarity in our direction. That means we can stay focused on what matters most—meeting people where they are and helping them find stability and hope.
